The Farm Today

cows in field in summer.jpgRainton Farm covers 850 acres or 340 hectares, and is rough grassland, ideal grazing for sheep and cattle. The rugged terrain, rocky ground and damp climate make crop growing and mechanized harvesting difficult.

Today, Rainton is an all-grass, mixed livestock farm with approximately 650 sheep, 85 dairy cows and 12 beef cows. Numbers vary with the time of year, depending on how many lambs and calves are on the farm. There are a further 200 younger cattle on the farm - the offspring of the cows.

The substantial reduction to the current numbers occurred as a result of our conversion to an organic farm.
